Fontana could soon overtake San Bernardino as the largest city in the county

When Census 2020 is done and dusted, Fontana is poised to emerge as the new most populous city in San Bernardino County, replacing the city of San Bernardino, which has long held that distinction and prestige as the county seat.

The latest census estimate as of July 1, 2018, shows San Bernardino’s population at 215,941 and Fontana right behind at 213,739 — a difference of 2,202.

Meanwhile, Fontana is growing at a remarkably faster rate than San Bernardino. Fontana’s population has increased an average of 1% per year since 2010 and has grown 8.3% between 2010 and 2018. By comparison, San Bernardino’s population has increased an average of 0.3% per year and has grown 2.7% between 2010 and 2018.

If the population increase continues at the current rate, it appears certain that Fontana will overtake San Bernardino in 2020.
